data mill: weaving digital tapestries

a two-part workshop

by Diarmuid Farrell

Online, Monday, April 29th and Tuesday, April 30th, 6-8 pm, 2024

data_mill was two day workshop that provided space for participants to reclaim ownership of their personal and communal digital footprint through the active process of digital weaving.

Using a hand made digital loom (web application), built by the artist, participants got the opportunity to craft their own tapestry using their personal data as the raw material.

The workshop explored methods of reflection in an age of digital ephemera. Participants weaved objects of personal meaning while investigating issues of private platform ownership, rapid optimisation and overproduction.

No technical expertise was required! Participants from a broad range of backgrounds were encouraged to attend.

  • Diarmuid Farrell is a digital folk artist, they adopt utilitarian methodologies from new media art such as data encryption, ix design and algorithmic development to aesthetically explore themes of ephemera, communal archival practices and contemporary landscapes.

Hello_World! was a 2024 online workshop programme led by three artists identified through an open call. The artists embraced novel and creative perspectives on the digital workshop format. They each hosted a two-part evening workshop that engaged with themes of interaction, performance, and participation, treating the workshop as a medium and artwork in itself.
